FALMOUTH — The Falmouth Agricultural Commission examined county and state farmland policy initiatives during its March meeting. Chair Stan Ingram reported that county commissioners have passed a 2 percent transfer tax on homes over $1 million, with towns allowed to earmark portions toward farmland preservation. The state "Seasonal Community" designation makes eligible towns able to seek state funds for affordable housing, with board members hoping to include agricultural workers in the eligible occupations list.
The board discussed ongoing participation in the CARAT regional food assessment program and local conservation efforts, including acquisition prospects for 186 Sandwich Road and the likely 40B development of Smithfield Farm. Members unanimously approved prior minutes.
