Committee questions its role after Select Board sidelines input on DEIB consultant.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Committee · Meeting of May 27, 2026
Falmouth's DEIB Advisory Committee convened to reassess its standing after the Select Board declined to adopt its recommendations on a consultant-led diversity strategic plan. Chair Mananjo Jonahson presented historical documents showing the town's DEIB officer position, approved and funded by Town Meeting in 2020, has remained vacant since 2022; the committee had initially endorsed a proposed RFP but unanimously rescinded endorsement on April 23, submitting formal concerns to the Select Board on April 29 that the consultant approach lacked implementation accountability and did not prioritize officer hiring. On May 18, the Select Board voted to proceed without adopting the committee's recommendations.
Committee members expressed concern that their input was sidelined, with Ocean Eversley arguing that an independent DEIB officer is necessary to field discrimination complaints outside the HR Department. The committee voted to schedule a meeting with the Town Manager for June 3 to address the communication breakdown.
