FALMOUTH — Water Quality Management Committee tables public comment policy after resident pushback. The committee unanimously approved a letter supporting the Barnstable Clean Water Committee's bog restoration grant. Ron Zweig presented a University of Massachusetts Dartmouth study on oyster aquaculture showing approximately 333 kilograms of nitrogen removal per acre per season, though committee members questioned the denitrification methodology and noted aquaculture may achieve only five to seven percent of overall reduction targets.
Wastewater Superintendent Amy Lowell reported the Great Pond Phase 1 sewer project bid at approximately $53 million with approximately $41 million in state financing at zero percent interest; construction begins April 1 with Route 28 closure through May 22, completion expected fall 2027. The proposed Nantucket Sound outfall would yield a net nitrogen reduction of approximately 12,000 kilograms per year by offsetting septic discharge; construction estimated 2031-2032.
