Falmouth Shellfish Beds Reopen After Rainfall Closure

Shellfishing areas along Falmouth's South Coast reopened Friday after a brief closure tied to heavy rainfall earlier in the week, while the town continues to manage a construction detour and a new water-quality advisory at two popular swimming spots.

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has cleared Falmouth South Coast shellfishing areas to reopen effective July 10, according to the town's News Flash feed. The areas had been closed since July 7 because of excessive rainfall, a standard precaution while the state awaits water-quality results following storms.

Separately, the town's sewer project continues to disrupt travel on two roads. Brick Kiln Road remains closed between Sandwich Road and Oxbow Road, and Maravista Avenue Extension remains closed between Teaticket Highway and Mattapan Street, both from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, per the latest construction update.

The town also posted an advisory after elevated bacteria levels turned up in the most recent water samples, taken July 8, from Wood Neck River and Surf Drive East. "No swimming" signs were posted within an hour of receiving the results, and the town says it is awaiting further testing before lifting the advisory.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The Falmouth Public Library's East, North and Main branches have a packed slate this week. Friday brought "Road to Revolution: The Boston Tea Party," a scavenger hunt, a World Cup quarterfinal watch party, a Board of Library Trustees meeting, a Dungeons & Dragons session and the Narrative Nonfiction Book Club discussing "1929," all at the Main branch.

Looking ahead, East Falmouth hosts a scavenger hunt and "It's Game Time!" on July 11, followed by Maker Mondays popsicle-stick catapults and a beginner paper quilling session on July 13, plus storytime on July 14 and a drop-in craft on July 15. North Falmouth has lawn games on July 13, a drop-in craft July 14, and a T-Rex-themed storytime and tea party July 15.

The Falmouth Historical Society is also hosting a Village Green Historical Walking Tour at Museums on the Green on July 14 at 10:30 a.m., part of a listserv item circulated this week.
