Falmouth Advances $1.9M Red Brook Culvert Project
Conservation Commission · Meeting of September 23, 2026
Falmouth backs $1.9 million Red Brook Road culvert fix with Mashpee. The Falmouth Conservation Commission voted unanimously to close the hearing and take under advisement a joint Falmouth-Mashpee project replacing a failing culvert blamed for a 2020 dam failure that drained a former cranberry bog and temporarily closed shellfish beds in Hamlin Pond. Mashpee DPW Director Catherine Laurent and Falmouth Town Engineer Jim McLaughlin presented alongside APCC restoration ecologist Mike Palmer, who said the project secured roughly $1.9 million from a NOAA Restoration Center habitat grant on top of $161,100 for design and a $127,000 split permitting cost.
"The town of Falmouth is very fortunate that Mashpee and APCC have done the lion's share of the work," McLaughlin said. The commission also continued three enforcement matters, including a Cape Codder Road violation decided 6-1, and voted to let reconstructed retaining walls at a Squibnocket Drive property remain at double their originally permitted height after Commissioner Michael Beckerle argued lowering them would worsen erosion.
